We implement, audit, and repair Pinterest conversion tracking so your campaigns optimize on real purchase signals and your reports reflect what actually happened in your store.

  • Talk directly to the founder
  • Reply within 1–2 business days
  • No commitment

No setup makes tracking perfect. We make your data as complete and trustworthy as your stack allows, and we document the limits.

Why it matters

Pinterest Can Only Optimize What It Can See

Pinterest's delivery system learns from the conversion events your site sends back. When the purchase event is missing, fires twice, or arrives without an order value, the platform optimizes toward the wrong people and your cost per acquisition drifts up.

Tracking also decides how you judge the channel. Pinterest journeys are often long: someone saves a pin today and buys next week, sometimes on another device. Without a solid setup, Pinterest looks weaker than it is, or stronger, and budget decisions follow the error.

That is why we start every Pinterest engagement with measurement, and why brands also hire us for standalone tracking work: Pinterest Tag setup, Conversions API implementation, and tracking audits for Shopify stores.

Standard events

Standard E-Commerce Events We Configure

Names below follow the Pinterest Conversions API. In the Pinterest Tag, the same events are written without underscores, for example pagevisit and addtocart.

Your choice

checkout is Pinterest's purchase event. It should fire once per order, with order value, currency, and order ID, and with product IDs that match your catalog.

How it works

Browser Tag, Server Events, One Clean Count

The Pinterest Tag runs in the shopper's browser and reports actions as they happen. The Pinterest Conversions API sends events from a server, so it is not affected by ad blockers or browser restrictions in the same way. Pinterest recommends using both.

  • Both sources send the same event with a shared event_id
  • Pinterest keeps one and discards the duplicate
  • Hashed customer data, sent with consent, can improve matching
  • We verify each event in Pinterest's diagnostics tools before sign-off

Implementation options

The Right Setup for Your Stack

There is no single correct tool. We recommend the simplest setup that gives you reliable data, then validate it.

Native

Pinterest for Shopify app

Pinterest's own app connects your store, installs the Pinterest Tag and the Conversions API, and syncs your catalog. For many Shopify brands this native setup is the right starting point. We configure it, remove duplicate tags, and check that events arrive with the right data.

When suitable

Server-side tracking platform

When you need richer server-side data or one setup across several ad platforms, a tool such as WeTracked can send enriched events to Pinterest. We recommend it only when it suits your stack, and we validate it like any other source.

Advanced

Custom Conversions API

Headless storefronts, custom checkouts, or offline and phone orders may need a direct Conversions API integration. We specify the events and parameters and work with your developer to implement and test them.

Know what you are measuring

Implementation, Data Quality, Attribution, Incrementality

These four terms get mixed up constantly. Keeping them apart is how you avoid bad budget decisions.

ConceptThe question it answers
Tracking implementation

Are the right events firing on the right pages, with the right names and parameters?

Data quality

Are values, currencies, order IDs, product IDs, and customer data complete, consistent, and deduplicated?

Attribution

Which conversions does Pinterest credit to its ads, under its attribution windows and rules? This is a platform-reported view.

Incrementality

How many sales would not have happened without the ads? Holdout tests, geo tests, or lift studies are needed to estimate it.

Attribution reports describe which conversions a platform credits to its ads under a set of rules. They do not establish the exact causal impact of advertising. Only controlled tests can estimate that.

Tracking audit

What a Tracking Audit Covers

Tag and event audit

One tag, installed once. Every event on the right page, named correctly, with no leftovers from old apps.

Purchase validation

Test orders checked end to end: value, currency, order ID, and product IDs in each checkout event.

Deduplication check

Browser and server events matched by event_id, so each order is counted once.

Catalog match

Product IDs in events match your catalog, so dynamic retargeting shows the right items.

Consent and privacy review

Tags respect your cookie banner and consent choices, and customer data is only sent when allowed.

Reporting alignment

Attribution windows documented and compared with Shopify orders, with the gaps explained.

Limitations

The Limits of Any Tracking Setup

Browser-based tracking loses events to ad blockers, browser privacy features, and short cookie lifetimes. Server-side tracking recovers some of that, but it cannot measure visitors who decline consent, and it cannot always connect a pin viewed on a phone to an order placed later on a laptop.

Platforms also estimate. View-through conversions, modeled conversions, and attribution windows all shape the numbers you see. None of this makes Pinterest reporting useless. It means reports should be read as a consistent, platform-specific view, cross-checked against Shopify orders, and complemented with incrementality tests when budgets are large enough.

FAQ

Pinterest Tracking Questions

Do I need the Conversions API if I already have the Pinterest Tag?

In most cases, yes. Pinterest recommends using the Conversions API together with the tag. The tag alone misses events blocked in the browser; the server connection fills part of that gap. Deduplication makes sure the two sources are not counted twice.

Does the Pinterest app for Shopify include the Conversions API?

Pinterest states that connecting your store through its Shopify app installs the Pinterest Tag and the Conversions API and syncs your product feed. We still verify that events arrive with the right values and IDs, because store configurations, themes, and other apps can interfere.

What is event deduplication?

When the same purchase is sent by the browser tag and by the server, both events carry the same event_id. Pinterest uses it to keep one event and drop the duplicate, so one order is counted once.

Is WeTracked required?

No. It is one option among several. We recommend a server-side platform like WeTracked only when it fits your stack and goals better than Pinterest's native Shopify connection or a custom integration.

Will server-side tracking fix my attribution?

It improves data quality and coverage. It does not remove attribution limits such as consent opt-outs, cross-device journeys, or platform attribution rules, and it does not measure incrementality on its own.

How do you handle consent and privacy?

Tags and server events should follow your consent setup, such as Shopify's cookie banner and customer privacy settings. We check that marketing tags load only when allowed and that customer data is hashed and sent only where your privacy policy and applicable law permit.

Did Shopify's August 2026 checkout update affect Pinterest tracking?

It may have. Since August 26, 2026, Shopify no longer runs the old Additional scripts on the Thank you and Order status pages. If your Pinterest purchase event lived there, it stopped firing. The fix is the Pinterest app for Shopify or a custom pixel in Customer events, with the same event names, values, and event_id logic. A quick test order shows whether you are affected.
